MP takes strangehold on food production

A Northern Irish MP is on a one man mission to eradicate bullying from the supply chain and boost UK food production.

Jim Shannon, the Democratic Unionist Party MP for Strangford, is determined to have an open debate in parliament to create policy on food production, local sourcing and oppressive supermarket demands.

Shannon has tabled an early day motion in order to drum up support for policies which would see increased support from government for food production and consequently a rise in private sector employment.

He has also tabled a motion to ensure that the Groceries Code Adjudicator, which is due to be introduced in 2012, would put an onus on retailers to increase local sourcing and support local economies.

Shannon told FPJ: “There is a need for proactive policy from government. We have got the capability to produce more but businesses need a mindset that they have state support.”
