Morrisons suffers sales slowdown

Morrisons has seen a slowdown in sales growth since its last update in May, it revealed today.

A sales update showed that like-for-like sales in the 23 weeks to July 15 increased by 3.0 per cent, or 2.6 per cent including fuel.

The decline has reflected the tougher trading conditions experienced in comparison to the same period last year, when the market benefited from hot weather and the World Cup.

But the retailer said converted stores, including those that are now in their third year of conversion, have continued to perform well.

Sir Ken Morrison, Morrisons chairman, said: “The board is satisfied with the overall performance of the business to date. Sales volumes are lower than we would like, but the company’s new marketing and store programme will commence later this month.

“Good progress is being made towards meeting our ambitious margin and cost targets and we are confident that we are well on track to deliver our expected outcome for the year.”

The chain’s interim results will be announced on September 20.
