Morrisons stocks pricey truffles

Morrisons is stocking fresh truffles as the rare and expensive ingredient is being trialled in its flagship store in Kirkstall, Leeds.

The Fresh Black summer truffle - officially named Tuber aestivfum Vitt - went on sale for a whopping £99.99 per kilo last week.

The delicacies are from the Umbria region of central Italy and are sourced by Italian truffle hunters who use specially trained dogs to find the delicacies in the dark of night from the roots of oak, elm, chestnut, pine and willow trees in the region. The way truffles are grown is near impossible to reproduce for the mass market and has not been a supermarket line until now.

Morrisons buyer Richard Hardaker said: “We pride ourselves on being able to offer the widest range of fresh ingredients we possibly can. Customers are becoming increasingly ambitious at-home chefs, seeking rarer and more unusual produce.

“We are lucky to work directly with suppliers in order to give a great price on a fantastic product such as this to make our stores a real destination for gourmets.”

The truffles are on shelf priced at £9.99 per 100g.
