Morrisons says its dealings are "fair"

Supermarket chain Morrisons has stressed its dealings with its suppliers are “fair”. The statement comes in the wake of the publication this week of the Competition Commission’s provisional findings into the UK groceries market.

The spokeswoman said the retailer welcomed “the very thorough nature of the report”, which she said confirmed “that the industry is broadly competitive”.

“Morrisons always deals with suppliers fairly and we invariably face strong competition wherever we operate across the UK,” she said. “The Competition Commission may put in place - or in the case of the planning process, recommend to Government - remedies to increase competition in some local areas. These could result in Morrisons being represented in more localities, offering consumers more choice for their grocery shopping.”

Morrisons said it remains fully supportive of the inquiry process as it enters into a short period of consultation followed by remedies hearings to discuss the written submissions received.

“We are confident that consumers will continue to benefit from choice and value, delivered by an intensely competitive UK grocery market,” the retailer concluded in written statement.
