Morrisons has announced the appointment of Penny Hughes as a non-executive director of the group. Hughes takes up her new position on 1 January 2010.

She is a non-executive director of Cable & Wireless and Home Retail Group as well as the president of the Advertising Association and a trustee of the British Museum. She has also recently accepted a non-executive directorship of Royal Bank of Scotland. Her previous experience includes 10 years with Coca-Cola ultimately as president of Coca-Cola GB & Ireland and various non executive roles including Body Shop International, GAP, Reuters and Vodafone.

Sir Ian Gibson, non-executive chairman of Morrisons, said: “I am pleased to be welcoming Penny Hughes to the group. Her extensive boardroom experience and business expertise will further strengthen our existing team.”

Hughes said: "I am looking forward to grocery retailing and to contributing to the success of Morrisons.” I am delighted to be joining the Morrisons team.”
