Morrisons has introduced Recyclopedia - an on-pack labelling scheme to help recycle more first revealed by FPJ in March.

The launch coincides with Recycle Now Week and features smiley-face logos. A big grin denotes fully recylcable or home-compostable, a smiling face means partly recyclable and a face not smiling means “not yet recyclable, but we’re working on it,” Morrisons said in a statement.

Each symbol is also accompanied by a speech bubble giving information about what can be recycled and how to find out where.

The logos do not yet feature on any produce lines, but will be rolled out gradually as new packaging is introduced over the next three years. The aim is to have the new logos on all lines by 2010.

“At Morrisons we are working to reduce packaging, looking for more sustainable sources and recyclable materials to avoid packaging waste being sent to landfill wherever we can,’ said the chain’s packaging technologist Mark Lee. “We’re not claiming to have all of the answers yet, but we can share what we do know with our customers and together help the environment.”
