Morrisons in fennel sales drive

Supermarket Morrisons has reported that sales of fennel in its stores have increased by over 60 per cent in the two weeks to the end of October.

Fresh produce buyer Bryan Worth said its distinct aniseed flavour and health benefits is becoming a popular alternative to more traditional vegetables among the chain’s shoppers. “Fennel has always been popular with our customers, who want fresh, delicious vegetables to use in their cooking,” said Worth.

“Recent news surrounding obesity, particularly in children, has encouraged people to stock up on interesting, nutritious fresh produce, which can be cooked and enjoyed by the whole family. Sales have increased over the last couple of weeks as the nights draw in and the warmth and aromas of the kitchen are a welcoming relief from the cold.”

Worth believes that shoppers are being inspired by recipes they see on TV. “Fresh ingredients are making a comeback as parents realise the benefits of using home cooking for the family,” said Worth.

The chain is promoting the product at 59p a piece until 18th November, down from 79p. It has also been running a PR campaign targeting regional press with two fennel soup receipes, one of which includes Bramley apple.
