Morrisons is facing up to the real potential for shelf shortages following an announcement of strike action by its delivery staff.

Union members based at distribution centres in Bristol, Cheshire, and Wakefield today voted by 918 to 289 to take the action in a row which follows the planned closure of three ex-Safeway distribution depots in Kent, Bristol and Cheshire, with the potential loss of up to 2,500 jobs.

A Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) spokesman said Morrisons had "blocked" trade union activity. The supermarket had not made itself available to comment at the time of writing. Morrisons had previously said that a review of its depots was under way, but the union says staff were not consulted and is now threatening strike action.

The workers will meet on Thursday to decide their next move.
