Morrisons confirms closure of depots

Bradford-based supermarket chain Morrisons is to shed around 1,600 jobs through the closure of depots in Kent and Bristol.

The company first warned back in September that the depots were at risk, sparking industrial action. But Morrisons is to continue with its plans to shut down the sites which are surplus to requirements following its £3bn acquisition of former rival Safeway in March 2004.

Morrisons says it has more depots than it needs to supply its stores.

The closures are hot on the heels of Morrisons decision to dispense with its depot in Warrington in December, with the loss of a further 700 jobs."We are aiming to minimise redundancies as far as possible and will be talking about alternative roles within Morrisons," said a company statement.
