Sir Ken: embattled

Morrisons is rumoured to be on the brink of a "new boardroom civil war", as it stares the prospect of a damaging strike in the face.

Industrial action by warehouse workers is due to begin on Friday and The Observer Sunday believes that top executives will be forced out if the strike takes place. It's lead business article claimed that the City will put pressure on Morrrisons to act, as the "significant" costs of lost custom and contingency planning would mount should the strike not be averted.

Although negotiations are ongoing, the general feeling is that the action will happen, and Morrisons has already apparently enlisted Exel and Christian Salvesen to step in should its distribution staff walk out. Around 4,000 staff could strike for as long as nine days, said The Observer.

The article said that chief executive Bob Stott, already in the firing line of the media, would be the first to come under scrutiny. But chairman Sir Ken Morrison is also inevitably going to come in for some criticism as the chain seems to lurch from one problem to another.
