The Monstercots were grown in California

A new large variety of apricot, the Monstercot, has arrived in the UK from the US in “excellent” condition under the slogan, “They’re so good... It’s scary!”

The hybrid apricot arrived into Sharrocks Fresh Produce this week from Grower Direct in California, via agent AMS Exports.

Sharrocks received a consignment of 120 3.8kg boxes and the shipping season is set to end in June, with a peak in availability in late May.

Brian Eastham, director of Sharrocks Fresh Produce, told freshinfo: “The fruit is of unbelievable quality; it’s almost what we would call a nectarcot as it has some real nectarine flavour.

“It has been specially grown to be larger and has arrived in very good condition. When we receive a larger consignment, the price should come down a bit - it’s around £20 for 3.5g at the moment.”

The Monstercots are set to hit a leading retailer next week, with in-store tasting sessions and promotions planned later in the month.

The Monstercot originated from apricot varieties grown in Mediterranean climates and, after years of researching varieties in Pakistan, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Romania, France, California and Washington, the perfect offspring was developed.
