The sale to Monaghan Mushrooms secured 470 jobs

The business and assets of Sussex Mushrooms have been sold and the company put into liquidation, freshinfp can reveal.

An as yet unnamed subsidiary of Monaghan Mushrooms purchased the Thakeham business and its assets on 15 July following a court validation order.

Joint liquidator FRP Advisory LLP were appointed by Sussex Mushrooms on 29 July in order to claw back debt for creditors.

The sale secured the jobs of all 470 employees, the continuity of its site operations and service to all customers.

Ian Sykes, partner at FRP Advisory LLP, said: “As joint liquidators, we are now focused on recovering as much of the book debt outstanding on behalf of the creditors of Sussex Mushrooms.”

The move strengthens Monaghan’s position in the UK market, adding further supply to Asda and Morrisons to a customer list that already includes large supplies to Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

It comes at a time of flux in the UK market, with Tesco supplier G’s Marketing also entering the sector with a large-scale mushroom project underway.

One source said: “In the last month, the creditors have been looking to see what may be recovered by way of recompense.”

Last year, Sussex Mushrooms revealed it had ambitious £10 million plans that it claimed would make it one of the most technically advanced suppliers in Europe.

Monaghan Mushrooms was unavailable for comment.
