Belgium’s auctions chalked up very varied results in 2008, according to Maarten De Moor, executive director of LAVA - the umbrella organisation of Flandria auctions. He said: “Glasshouse vegetables didn’t do well in 2008. The poor summer reduced demand and pushed down prices for summer vegetables. Vine tomatoes held up well, buts sales of loose tomatoes weren’t so good and it was a decidedly bad season for cucumbers.” Looking ahead, the biggest challenge in 2009 for LAVA auctions will be to become more flexible to react to a changing market, he added.
