Mixed messages from cherry sector

The UK cherry season has started with early production regions providing premium packs into the major multiples this week. It will be another two weeks however, before larger volumes come on stream, and overall there is some disappointment in the likely crop.

“We won’t be starting until next week and it is disappointing this year as there has been a fair amount of run off,” said Ian Waller of The Summerfruit Company. “We will be way down on our expected tonnage as so much fruit dropped off. No one variety has been more affected than another, but there are some areas of the country where the problem has been worse than others.”

Kent will be the first region to come on stream for The Summerfruit Company, with early volumes supplied in punnets before the maincrop gets going in the next two weeks and loose fruit is marketed.

Quality and flavour of remaining fruit is reported to be good by KG Fruits which expects its volumes will be in line with recent averages.
