The industry owned supermarket-monitoring service Market Intelligence Services (MIS) has increased the coverage and frequency of its collections.

As of July, MIS is monitoring more flagship stores around the country, as well as new large stores with varied demographic profiles.

The move is part of the company’s ongoing development programme, which has seen the introduction of electronic data capture and a web based system, allowing subscribers to analyse the data on price, country of origin and promotion mechanic.

Tim Mudge, commercial manager at MIS, said: “MIS has gone from strength to strength over the years by listening to the subscribers and reacting to their wishes. These changes are just a small step, and there will more improvements very soon allowing subscribers to tailor the reports to their own specific requirements.”

The retail price reports were introduced nearly 15 years ago to help growers, packers and importers strengthen their position in the market. The reports have now developed to help the same companies in the increasingly sophisticated retail supply business. MIS is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Processed Vegetable Growers’ Association, which is owned by key crop associations and vegetable growers from around the UK.

“We realise that the supply chain needs to be better informed, and that is why we have invested in our new system and we are working hard to make sure it becomes fast, flexible and easy to use,” Mudge added. “We also work with companies compiling bespoke reports looking in more depth at product ranges, and we can offer a near market research by using our staff around the country to survey consumers at the point of purchase.”
