Sales of organic food and drink are on the up, with sales expected to increase 72 per cent by the end of the decade, a Mintel report has revealed.

By 2010, Mintel analysts estimate the organics sector will reach a value of around £2 billion.

It said a major factor in the sector’s phenomenal growth is a forecasted rise in middle-age consumers - keen buyers of organic produce.

This age group is particularly important for fruit and vegetable sales: while 54 per cent of people buy organic fruit and vegetables overall, this number increases to 66 per cent of 55-64 year-olds. This demographic is expected to rise six per cent by 2009.

Disposable income is also expected to surge to around 40 per cent by 2010, fuelling sales.

But despite the massive growth reported, some experts think that the forecasts are conservative.
