Ahead of the European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking on November 8, a new EU MiniChefs website has been launched for children to promote healthy living and eating.

The site shows youngsters how they can eat and cook healthily in a fun way, and also contains a competition allowing them to design a poster for the European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking.

The theme of the competition, open to nine to12-year-olds, is “the pleasure of eating well in Europe”, and is open from mid-May to mid-June. The winner will be announced in Brussels in September.

In November, chefs across Europe will go to schools to promote healthy eating. According to the European Commission, every year another 400,000 children in the EU become overweight or obese.

Although exotics sales are on the up, the World Health Organisation (WHO) believes that traditional fruit and vegetable products are a key tool in the fight against obesity and disease in Europe. On June 7, MEPs will debate a report that calls for funding to promote fruit and vegetables.
