Jose Mujica opens the new facility

Uruguayan president José Mujica and his agriculture minister Tabaré Aguerre officially opened a new packhouse for citrus producer Milagro last week.

The company is part of the Argentinean San Miguel group and has just unveiled the 5,000 sq metre facility in the southern Uruguayan region of San José. The packhouse will handle 6,000 tonnes of fruit a month during the peak of the southern hemisphere citrus season from May to October.

Aguerre said the project, which represents an investment of some $3 million, brought together a host of characteristics identified by the government’s national strategy for citrus such as social sustainability, technological innovation, conquering international markets and plant and food safety certification.

“We see very good opportunities for citrus to grow as a sector but also for it to be used as a model for the development of other agri-export sectors that to date have just concentrated on the domestic market such as apples and pears, for example.”
