Mexican banana exporter Coliman is growing exports to Europe as part of a push to reach out to new markets.

The Sonora-based firm is expecting to send two containers to the UK each week after entering the European market six months ago, kicking off with sendings to the UK through Fruesh Ltd.

The team worked to obtain GlobalGAP certification last year.

Audeé Ríos Canobbio, who works in international sales at Coliman, said: “It’s a very small volume, but it’s just the start. We are looking to target markets outside the US even though for Mexico, the US is the natural export partner.

“The major companies like Chiquita and Del Monte rule the banana world but one of the advantages of working with us is that you can talk directly to the producer.”
