Mexican Hass avocado production is set to hit a record high this season despite potentially harsh weather conditions.

Avocado production is forecast to reach a record 1.15 million tonnes in 2008-09, which is 13.35mt higher than production in 2007-08.

Sources indicate production will increase due to younger trees coming into full bearing and the continued implementation of programmes to control pests.

During late 2008 and early 2009 there is potential for harsh weather conditions in Michoacán, but producers are confident the blooming stages will not be significantly affected, as favourable weather conditions are predicted throughout the rest of the year.

Producers are taking steps, such as the food safety certification set for June 2010, to ensure safe and healthy avocados either for export or for supplying the domestic market.
