Medway's new melon measures

Medway Ports is setting up a specialised temperature controlled warehouse within its docks to offer Brazilian melon importers an on-port service aimed at reducing distribution costs.

It will provide box-end and individual labelling, as well as a full inspection service if required and will be operational shortly as the season gets underway.

Paul Glock, marketing manager estimates that some 45,000 pallets of melons come through the port annually and told freshinfo the service could be extended to serve other sources in addition to Brazil.

"It obviously has to prove its value and be below current costs of fruit which shipped through to have the same job done elsewhere," he said.

Final discussions with several companies are taking place this week.
