Meat is murder on water supplies

Meat needs to come off the world’s menu to conserve dwindling water supplies, scientists have warned.

The news could provide a boost to vegetable producers, as delegates were also told that veg is the ideal substitute.

Growing world demand for meat and dairy products is unsustainable, delegates to the World Water Week conference in Stockholm were told this week.

Consumption patterns need to change as animals require much more water than grain to produce the same amount of food, claimed the Stockholm International Water Institute.

It said: “Feeding the world’s growing population and finding the water to grow the food continues to be a basic and sizeable challenge.”
