McDonald's makes apple commitment

McDonald's will include a quarter cup or half serving of apple slices in the new Happy Meal it introduces in September.

Upon request, a second bag of apple slices will be available to customers who prefer the fruit to the meal's other side dishes.

The company aims to be serving fruit with every Happy Meal it sells in its 14,000 US restaurants from the end of the first quarter of next year.

The plan is part of McDonald's strategy to improve the nutrition choices available to consumers and raise nutrition awareness among children and parents.

Jan Fields, president of McDonald’s USA, said: “McDonald’s will always try to do the right thing, and we know we can help make a difference in our communities. The commitments we’re announcing today will guide the future evolution of our menu and marketing.”

McDonald’s has committed to significantly reducing added sugars, saturated fat and calories through varied portion sizes, reformulations and innovations by 2020.
