The potato balls will be aimed at older children

McCain Foods is set to capitalise on the impending World Cup football fever with a new frozen potato product - McCain Footballs.

The balls, which are made from mashed potato and prepared with 100 per cent sunflower oil, are set to retail at £1.69 for a 600g pack.

The company hopes they represent a convenient meal-time solution for families and are designed with older children in mind, to bridge with McCain Smiles and more adult-orientated McCain products such as its wedges.

Alan Castle, head of customer marketing at McCain, said: “Innovation at McCain is driven by consumer insight and our research tells us that as children get older they are looking for more grown-up food and for mum the challenge is to strike the right balance between nutritious food and empty plates. McCain Footballs delivers that and helps retain these consumers within our portfolio, and also the category as a whole.”

McCain Footballs’ eye-catching packaging - which places the product on a football pitch background - intends to convey the company’s “real potato goodness” message and gives the product the limelight during the World Cup tournament and beyond. Packaging also features colour-coded front-of-pack guideline daily amount nutritional information.
