MBMG introduces belle of the ball

An eye-catching new potato variety introduced by MBMG turned the heads of growers at British Potato 2007 last week.

Blue Belle is a white maincrop potato with distinctive markings, aimed at the pre-pack market.

Around 10 tonnes of seed have so far been produced.

Steve Mathias, at the MBMG seed department, told FPJ: “This variety is only really coming into the market this season, but we have had a lot of interest fro both growers and retailers. It ticks all the boxes in terms of taste and cooking quality, as well as disease resistance, but its big selling point is its unique appearance.”

MBMG managing director Pepe Bascetta insisted the company would not be held back by the difficult season faced this year, and said growth is the aim for next year. He told FPJ: “We are looking out for acquisitions and we also intend to grow our core business.

The company has an annual turnover of £130 million.
