Success on a plate: MBM Juliette potatoes

Struggling potato producers MBM is back on the road to recovery, claimed bosses.

Speaking at the Glenthorn Growers’ annual dinner at Kings Lynn, Pepe Bascetta said the company was fighting back.

He said the previous year had “not been one of the most enjoyable years for MBM”.

“We have suffered an awful lot of loss of contracts and as a resultof that, obviously we have eroded some of the grower and customer confidence

“However, on a more positive note, MBM is beginning to get some recovery. We’ve got a new management team in place and while we know we’ve got a lot of work to do, we are beginning to turn the tide and win some contracts.

“It would be nice to say they are going to bite in 2005, but they’re not. Some of them take a year-and-a-half to come to fruition.”

He predicted that by 2006 and 2007 the company would have recovered more volume than they lost in 2004.

"That is not the end of the journey for us because what we do realise is that MBM has got to grow not just to where it was. It has also to change and evolve to be a fitter and stronger MBM,” he added.

Last year proved to be a disastrous year for the company, which having failed to gain Tesco business, found itself losing a significant Sainsbury’s account.
