Mastronardi awarded for tomato innovation

Mastronardi Produce’s Sunset-branded tomatoes took top honours in the tomato category at a recent innovation award listing in the US.

Food & Beverage Executive Magazine gave Sunset top marks in its list of Innovation Award winners, with an emphasis on packaging and merchandising.

Paul Mastronardi, executive vice-president, said: “We continue our worldwide research and development each year of unique, flavourful, gourmet tomatoes. It is with great pleasure that we accept this Innovation Award as the leading innovator for 2009 for the tomato category.”

Gerard Vander Schauw, publisher of Food & Beverage Executive, said: “We are pleased to award Mastronardi for their innovation in the tomato category.”

Among some of the tomatoes grown and marketed by Mastronardi under its Sunset brand include the Campari, the Splendido Grape Tomato, the Champagne Cherry Tomato and the Kumato, to name a few.

Mastronardi said: “To grow the tomato category, we need to educate consumers on how to use speciality tomatoes. It’s more than just chopping them and putting them into salads. For example, the Sunset Kumato tomato is a unique tomato experience… Innovation begins with bringing the right tomato to market after conducting extensive trials and market testing. We appreciate being recognised as a tomato innovator.”
