Mash masterclass at Waitrose

Waitrose embraced the drop in temperatures this week by introducing a spud that makes “master mash” to its range this week.

The Arran Victory, which has 33 per cent less water content than traditional potatoes, will be available in 185 stores for three months.

The variety, which has a bright purple skin and white flesh, was first bred in 1918 in Scotland and was named in celebration of the ending of World War I.

Peter Cooke, Waitrose potato buyer, said: “As the weather gets colder there is nothing more comforting than mounds of fluffy white mash. People often think the common spud is boring but, with more than 19 different varieties now on offer, we have the perfect potato for everything from chips to jackets.”

The product will retail at £1.99 for 1kg.
