Greengrocer, self-styled metric martyr and Third Way candidate for the Greater London Authority at next week's elections Dave Stephens has declared today June 2 Banana Day.

The Essex retailer gave away bananas outside his shop in Hornchurch in memory of the late Steve Thoburn of Sunderland, a fellow metric martyr and greengrocer who was convicted for selling a pound of bananas at Sunderland market. He died on March 14 of a suspected heart attack.

"In memory of Steve Thoburn, I will continue to sell in pounds and ounces, whatever the European Union might demand," said Stephens. "This is not an issue of measurement, but a freedom issue."

Stephens and metric martyr Neil Herron, an independent candidate for the European Parliament in north-east England, were due to deliver a letter to prime minister Tony Blair at 2pm today at 10, Downing Street.

"We are demanding the prime minister reject the call by the Labour-dominated Local Government Association to prosecute traders who, in contravention of an EU directive, continue to sell loose goods in pounds and ounces," said Stephens.

Herron and Stephens will deliver their letter with a bunch of bananas as a gift to Blair in memory of their brother in arms, Thoburn.
