Apple grower Manning’s will next week start supplying New Spitalfields Market-based Cook’s Delight with Jonagold apples and juice, as part of a link-up facilitated by the market’s business development manager Tim Williams.

The deal has been in the making for 18 months and will see Herefordshire-based Manning’s send 1.5 tonnes of apples to the market each week for the next four to five months, as well as 650,000 bottles of juice a month all year round.

Grower James Manning sampled these lines at Portobello Road Market’s English Apple Festival, held last Friday.

He was joined by Williams, who told freshinfo: “We are trying to get more direct dealings with growers. The project is about getting involved with more growers and one of the big things we are working with them on is packaging. English growers, on the whole, won’t spend money on this because it can be quite expensive, but they don’t realise that if it looks right, it will sell well - if it doesn’t, they are undervaluing their produce.”

The English Apple Festival gave consumers the chance to taste National Fruit Show prize-winning apples, as well as sample recipes including squash and apple soup,, Bramley apple crumble, apple and celery salad and chutney with caramelised fennel and apple.
