The National Fruit Show is one of the UK industry's key events

The Marden Fruit Show Society (MFSS) is to hold its AGM this week as it looks ahead to the National Fruit Show.

The MFSS will hold the meeting at East Malling Research station on Thursday covering long-term storage and the fruit show.

After an “intense” five-month review covering the constitution, legal status, structure, the duration, the focus and even the location of the National Fruit Show

In developing a new strategy for the event.

The details will be announced at the 77th AGM of the Marden Fruit Show by Sarah Calcutt, chairman of the Society.

“In order to remain a benefit to the industry both in terms of access to information and as a showcase of excellence it is important that the society continues to evolve,” said Calcutt.

“We remain focussed on the needs of the grower, we are a fruit show first and foremost and I aim to ensure that we continue to grow and develop alongside the industry.”

An increase in the numbers of new exhibitors saw the inclusion of Platipus Anchors, PHS Teacrate and the Gangmasters Licensing Authority amongst others joining the 2010 edition. The show also saw a significant numbers of visitors from outside Kent - including Gloucestershire, Sussex, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Holland.

The society will also be awarding the new president’s award for outstanding service to the fruit industry for the first time on Thursday.

The RT Hon Michael Jack has commissioned two awards for 2011 to recognise the outstanding work and service to the fruit show and the wider industry by Alan Todd and Robert Mitchell. The society will also be recognising the work of Martin Howells for the fruit show with the new chairman’s award.
