Inefficient packhouses are losing the fresh produce industry some five to nine per cent of product, which is inadvertently being given away, it was revealed at Fruit Logistica last week.

Murray Hilborne, managing director of UK-based packhouse system supplier Marco, held a seminar on the importance of efficiency and claimed that giveaway was compromising the industry.

“Packhouse efficiency is something that we wish to bring to the forefront,” he said. “We believe that through innovation we can deliver dramatic cost savings with full product traceability.”

Marco aims to achieve cost savings and full traceability for the fresh produce industry with its TRAC-IT MES system, and its yield control manager TRAC-IT YCM.

“Customers demand a high level of record-making and want accountability in the chain,” Hilborne said.

“To make good decisions, we have to have good information around us. If you keep updating systems, everyone will make better decisions,” he added.

“The TRAC-IT YCM system will help the industry with yield control.”
