M&S welcomes its first UK Williams

Marks & Spencer is to stock Kent-grown Williams pears for the first time.

The premium-end retailer is working closely with growers to extend its range of British top fruit.

Chloe Soppet, M&S apple and pear buyer, pictured, said: “When in season, M&S customers love Williams pears, but until now they have always had to be imported. At a grower meeting, the opportunity of trialling UK-grown Williams was raised and, by working with Worldwide Fruit and the team at Howard Chapman, we are taking the first steps to proving what a wonderful, delicious product UK Williams can be.”

Nigel Lee, Worldwide Fruit business unit manager, added: “M&S has supported extensive trial work and given UK growers the opportunity to prove that they can grow Williams pears as well as anyone else.”
