Marks & Spencer has been voted the best retailer to work for by youngsters aged 14 to 19, according to a survey conducted in June.

The poll, carried out by an external research agency on behalf of Skillsmart Retail, the Sector Skills Council for Retail, questioned 723 young people. Of this number, 38 per cent were working in the retail sector.

Linda Graham, graduate and BPP programme manager for M&S, said: “I am delighted that M&S has been ranked as the top retailer. We’ve worked hard to ensure that we offer exciting career opportunities both in our stores and head office. We have recently launched a comprehensive career path development programme for our staff, which starts from day one and enables everyone to progress within the company.”

Tesco and Asda ranked second and third respectively, while Comet, Dixons and small independent stores came near the bottom of the poll.
