Marks & Spencer is claiming a UK supermarket first by selling green tomatoes.
The Lancashire-grown tomato, which was originally discovered in Israel by grower Andy Roe, will be a sweet-tasting variety. The retailer confirmed that it also plans to bring four additional new tomato varieties to the UK market.
“Not only do they look great, but they taste fantastic and will brighten up any salad bowl as well as being ideal for snacking,” said M&S tomato technologist Jo Oliver.
M&S also claims that it is now selling the 'smallest apples on the high street'. The Tiddly Pomme variety, which consists of miniature versions of Royal Gala Apples, was discovered by chance by fruit consultant David Cranwell of producer Empire World Trade. Cranwell stumbled across an unusual tree during a routine orchard walk.
Although the first commercial crop is set to be grown in New Zealand, the retaileralsoplans to plant trees in the UK.
M&S say that the new product launches are part of its plans to tap into the fast-growing snacking market and that the new varieties reflect its customers becoming more adventurous.
Tiddly Pomme apples are now available in M&S stores throughout the UK priced at £1.49 for a pack of six, whileSweet Green Cherry Tomatoes are available at selected stores priced at £1 for 100g.
