Marks & Spencer is to examine its buying department in a review that will affect at least 40 buyers, with at least six set to lose their jobs, it has been claimed.

The Grocer reported that the retailer is rationalising its staff in response to tougher trading conditions.

A manufacturer supplying M&S told the magazine: “Between 30 or 40 people are on notice and will have to reapply for their jobs.

“Other retailers have done this in the past, but if they treat their own employees like this, it is an indication of what suppliers can expect,” he added.

M&S confirmed it was “combining a small number of buying roles to avoid duplication”, but denied that buyers would have to reapply for their jobs.
