M&S to introduce new tomato

A unique variety of Almerían green tomato could soon become a feature in UK fresh produce aisles if an impending trial by Marks & Spencer is successful.

The Raf tomato is indigenous to Almería, Spain, and will make its debut at an M&S store in York in two to three weeks time, with 20 cases being trialled in the outlet.

Grown in La Cañada, an area which supplier Casur says is the only place the variety can achieve perfect conditions, Raf ripens from the inside. It is a vivid green colour creating the impression that it has failed to ripen.

Casur president, Jose Martinez Portero, said he hopes UK consumers can overcome the fruit’s appearance as the flavour and texture of the tomato is very pleasing.

If the trials are a success, it could be a lucrative move for Casur, which currently supply on the vine and loose tomatoes to Asda; premium examples of Raf cost up to €5 a kg.
