M&S Sproutsuma arrives on Xmas wave

Sales of sprouts have seen a rocket in the last two years, while Mars & Spencer has further engaged itself in the market for the veg.

Sprout sales have seen a dramatic 46 per cent increase in the last two years, while more than 40,000 tonnes have been sold in the UK in the last 12 months, according to TNS data.

Growers in the UK produce 264 million sprouts for the festive season, with Britons eating more sprouts than anyone else in Europe.

And a sprout is going on sale at M&S that is so packed with vitamin C it contains seven times more than a satsuma.

The Super C Sprout - nicknamed the Sproutsuma - is so nutritious that only two need to be eaten to obtain a full day’s allowance of the vitamin. The sprouts have been grown in Gloucestershire exclusively for M&S and are selling at £1.59.

Dr Simon Coupe, M&S agronomist, told the Daily Express: "The Super C is naturally sweeter so we hope customers will enjoy it even more than normal sprouts and give themselves a vitamin boost in the run-up to Christmas.”

Ready prepared sprouts have seen a particularly large boost in supermarket sales over the last year.

Many growers begin harvesting in early July and end the season the following April, with supply increasing fivefold in the fortnight before Christmas.

Harvesting often occurs well into the evening with the possibility of overnight frost in the UK high in the winter months.
