Asparagus grower Wye Valley Produce managed to get new-season British crop onto retail shelves in time for Christmas.

M&S offered a very limited number of bundles of the first British asparagus of the season in time for local Hereford shoppers to enjoy for Christmas Eve.

The initial harvest was a limited edition, representing the early pickings from young crowns. Those crowns will mature in coming years, yielding larger volumes of asparagus.

The retailer noted that its supplier, the Chinn family, has a focus on sustainable farming and uses natural sunlight and on-farm compost to nurture its crops.

Kenny MacLeod, M&S produce trading manager, said: “This delicious British asparagus, arriving before Christmas, is a fantastic example of the great quality and value M&S is known for. Thanks to our close partnership with Wye Valley Farm, we’re able to bring our Hereford customers a special seasonal treat.”

Wye Valley Produce’s Chris Chinn added: “This especially early crop is the product of innovative methods at Wye Valley Farm, and environmental sustainability is a key focus for us. We are absolutely delighted to supply M&S Hereford with early-season British asparagus.”

The very limited supply of British asparagus will be available for purchase exclusively at the M&S Hereford store until volumes increase early in the new year.
