Striking red-coloured bananas were unveiled on supermarket shelves this week.
The colour of the Macabu skin is created by the significant presence of Beta Carotene, according to stockist Marks and Spencer.
And the fruit is said to be much sweeter than the traditional yellow type, achieving optimum sweetness about four days after purchase.
The retailer's fruit specialist, Emmett Lunny, referred to the Red Macabu as one of the "best looking bananas in the high street".
He said, "Its awesome colour makes it perfect for the fruit bowl and its appealing flavour will add an exciting twist to fruit salads."
M&S is selling the red bananas in packs of four at £1.49.
