Marks & Spencer is reportedly set to cull more than 1,000 jobs in the wake of its worst Christmas trading performance for 80 years.

The move, which will see positions lost from head office and support sectors as well as shop floors, is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

It is not clear whether there are plans to shut any of the 600 shops across the UK.

The retailer has so far refused to comment on the decision.

Food sales at the chain are said to have dropped by up to 10 per cent on last year, despite the usual rise during the festive season.
