M&S label carbon

Marks & Spencer is to begin labelling food that has been imported to the UK by air in a bid to raise consumer awareness of food miles.

The logo will initially appear on a range of 20 food products that will include beans, mangetout and strawberries, with this number set to reach 150 by the end of the year.

The retailer said that the introduction of the logo is part of its £200m ‘eco plan’, Plan A, which includes buying as much food from UK and Ireland as possible, doubling the level of its regional sourcing, developing its local supply networks, minimising the amount of airfreighted food and researching the carbon footprints of its food products.

The airfreight marque will feature a small aeroplane symbol with the words ‘air freighted’ on it.
