Marks & Spencer is considering 400 job cuts with the closure of a distribution centre in Tunbridge Wells.

The company said the move, following a review of stock requirements, would lead to a tighter operation at the Exel run site.

Unions, including shop staff union USDAW and the United Road Transport Union, are calling for more details.

The closure of the centre on the Colebrook Industrial Estate is likely to happen in September.

A statement issued by M&S said: “We have conducted a review of our catalogue and stock-holding requirements in conjunction with alternative ways of servicing our stores.

“We regret the possible redundancies this could lead to, but we have to have a tighter operation of our supply chain.”

Logistics provider Exel said the two companies were still finalising and negotiating details. “Exel is in close, regular consultation with all employees and full briefings are being provided to update staff at every stage,” a spokesman added.
