Marks & Spencer has branched outside the UK in chilled foods for the first time in its history, to enter Asian market in Hong Kong.

It has opened three trial Food to Go outlets in Hong Kong, the first time that the chain has sold chilled foods outside the UK and Ireland in its 125-year history, selling 42 lines including sandwiches, salads and smoothies - all sourced in the region.

The retailer is also importing fresh-cut flowers from Kenya in eight of its Hong Kong stores on a trial basis, offering M&S a challenge in to keep a five-day freshness assurance in the humid conditions.

M&S opened its first stores in Hong Kong in the late 1980s, but had problems attributed to “basic shopkeeping” errors by executive chairman Sir Stuart Rose, in establishing its flagship 40,000sqft Shanghai store in China.

Simeon Piasecki, managing director of M&S Greater China, said: "We're excited to be offering our first range of chilled foods outside of the UK and Ireland, here in Hong Kong. Our customer feedback shows that there is a demand for our great quality, good value chilled food products."
