Further infighting at Marks & Spencer is expected after the board failed to reach agreement over who would be its next chairman this week.

Despite this however, media reports indicate the retailer is hoping to have reached a decision before it announces its results on May 25.

M&S refused to comment, but an insider was reported as saying that all sides were still talking over the issue.

Non-executive director Kevin Lomax is keen to see interim-chairman Paul Myners replaced as he feels the chairman is too close to chief executive Stuart Rose. However Myners has said he is determined to stay on.

Analysts have called the situation shambolic but said the issue of the chairmanship is not relevant to the prospects of the company.
