M&S and Tesco top of admiration awards

Marks & Spencer has been voted Britain’s Most Admired Company, in an awards ceremony organised by Managementtoday.com (MT).

It is the first time in 16 years the company has claimed the accolade, with the highest-ever score in the category.

Ceo Stuart Rose picked up the award. The retailer also managed to outdo its 219 rivals on the night, in no fewer than five of the nine awards categories of the evening.

Last year’s Most Admired Company, Tesco, slipped to second place but managed to generate a higher score for itself than in 2006, and boss Sir Terry Leahy collected the award for Most Admired CEO for the fifth year running.

MT’s Britain’s Most Admired Companies Awards are judged by the companies competing against each other. Professor Mike Brown and his team at Nottingham Business School take the 10 largest listed companies in the UK in each of the 22 sectors, and ask them to rate their rivals in nine separate categories.

The firms with the 10 highest aggregate scores win an overall Britain’s Most Admired Company award, while the highest-scoring firm in each of the 22 industry sectors is also honoured.
