Organisers of this year’s Malvern Show are hoping to encourage the trend to ‘grow your own’ fruit and veg by launching an ‘Edible Gardens’ competition.

The Three Counties Agricultural Society (TCAS), who organise the show, are inviting individuals, gardening clubs and allotment societies to design and stage a display garden at the show, which will take place on September 29 and 30 at the Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire.

The society said that gardens can have a ‘serious or an entertaining theme’, even incorporating unusual props ‘such as tin baths, chimney pots, old washtubs, tv sets and even small livestock’ into the theme, as long as at least 75 percent of the planting includes plants grown for their food producing qualities - with the first entries approved being awarded a grant of £500.

TCAS spokeswoman Sharon Gilbert said: “The health benefits of eating home produce and the satisfaction of sowing, growing and harvesting food from the garden for the plate has finally hit home, and growing your own is becoming extremely popular.

“Vegetable growing, and giant vegetables feature heavily at the show, and the huge Harvest Pavilion is always a great draw, so display gardens with mainly edible planting seemed a natural extension.”
