Maersk turns to rivals after DR pull-out

Shipping giant Maersk has had to look to its arch-rivals to continue banana supply from the Dominican Republic after its decision to pull the plug on supply from the Caribbean country.

The company has been obliged to buy slots from Seatrade, Geest and Hamburg Sud as shipping deals run on an annual January to December basis.

The CRX Service will now see Dominican Republic bananas come into Portsmouth, rather than Tilbury in Essex, a decision one source said was “much better” for importers due to delays at Tilbury.

The insider added: “The Dominican Republic producers did not see it coming at all. Maersk obviously decided it was not economically viable to run the service from Costa Rica - loading in Puerto Moín - and then up to the UK via the Dominican Republic.”
