Mack Wholesale has announced the purchase of the fruit and vegetable division of Newquay-based wholesaler RT Julian & Son.
The Cornwall company has a strong customer base including many of South West England’s hotels and restaurants. The acquisition represents Mack Wholesale’s first foray into the region. “Up until now [it] has been largely inaccessible because of geographical constraints,” said a spokesman for Mack. “This acquisition is therefore vital to the ambitious growth and expansion plans of Mack Wholesale, as it brings not only its experience and reputation, but also its principles of quality, service and value to the area.
“Its [RT Julian & Son’s] modern, temperature-controlled facility provides many opportunities for Mack to grow volumes, introduce new customers and revitalise the local market.”
Mack Newquay, which is based on the Treloggan Industrial Estate, will be managed by Les Garey. He said: “This is a very exciting new venture for us. Mack Newquay gives us the opportunity to challenge convention and raise the bar for service and quality of product here.
“We’re looking forward to reaching new customers and growing this business.”
Paul Butlin, general manager of Mack Wholesale, told FPJ: “This acquisition is of significant strategic importance to Mack. Not only are we breaking into new territory, but Mack Newquay will work as something of an extension to our long-established branch at Bristol market.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to provide an even better service to our West Country customers,” he added.
Alongside this acquisition, Mack plans to improve the technology and facilities in its other wholesale branches, in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Southampton and Wolverhampton.
Mack, now part of the Fresca Group, has its origins in wholesale, when it started trading in 1874.
