A leading UK importer has announced a deal which will see it being purchased by M&W Mack.

The company has agreed, in principle to purchase a majority interest in Primafruit, a major importer of grapes, stonefruit, kiwi and other fruits for UK multiples. The deal is intended to be completed by February 2005.

The move strengthens Mack, which is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of fresh produce, serving a wide customer based from major supermarkets to independent retailers, food service and florists.

The company, headed up by chairman Christoper Mack, operates a number of autonomous business units in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Paddock Wood, Southampton, Spalding and Wolverhampton.

Primafruit, established in 1981 by Bill Huth, operates from a purpose built factory in Evesham, headed up by Craig Huth, managing director, Sean Foy, operations director and Jamie Marskell, buying director. The company will continue to operate independently of Mack.

Huth said: “We are excited by this opportunity which will allow us to continue to provide the highest levels of service and innovation to our customers while continuing to maintain our close relationships with some of the best growers in the world.

“Although we will continue to run our business independently of the other Mack businesses, we will clearly benefit from being an important part of this respected family of produce companies.”
